120 parakeets were found packed into boxes along a busy I-35.

“We received a call that there were three boxes of parakeets found,” Julie Bank, of Animal Welfare, said. “Each of them had multiple layers of parakeets. There was food and water inside, turned out to be about 120 parakeets.”

The birds are being housed at Oklahoma City’s Animal Welfare building.

“There’s a lot of singing,” she said. “It’s a little bit of a ruckus. My guess is they’re having a party in there for the day.”

According to Banks, the parakeets are all “banded,” so the department is searching far and wide to find where they came from.

“It could be somebody abandoned them. It could be someone stole them and abandoned them,” Bank said. “It could be that they fell out of a truck, when they were being transported. We don’t know.”

In a matter of days, if the rightful owner doesn’t come forward, these birds will be available for adoption.

“If nobody comes forward after a couple more days, then we’ll have a lot of parakeets that will be looking for a new home,” Bank said. “They’re really sweet and looking for good families.”

However, even if the owner is identified, a criminal investigation could be launched to find if the birds were illegally abandoned.
