How to Tell a Parakeet’s Gender
We like to think there’s an easy way to tell the sex of our parakeets.
And sometimes there is. But in the world of budgies, where there are now so many breeds, there are many exceptions to the rules.
Des Budgie Girl finds that sexing budgies is quite easy. She’s been doing it for years and can tell just by looking what a budgie is regardless of age or color. Here she talks mostly about how to tell the gender visually based on the cere or the nose color. She explains the exceptions to the general rule of boys have blue noses and girls have brown noses. The main exceptions are the pastels and of course young birds.
Normal, as in greens, blues and greys, have pink noses as young males and white to bluish white noses as females. The pastels like the recessive pieds and all white or light yellow budgies are different. The males keep the pink nose into adulthood. The females turn brown. And there are a few rare times where a pastel male will have a blue nose. But that’s very rare.
